Good things:
1) They try (they work to make a lot of plant-based entrees)
2) They listen to customer input and make focus groups specifically for vegans/vegetarians
3) When they want to go all out, they go ALL OUT
4) They offer alternatives like vegan butter and soy milk
5) Vegan pizza!!!
6) Their striving to be more plant-based was the reason why I felt financially comfortable with going vegan.
Cons:
1) Although it says they have an all-vegan station, they do not. They have a vegan/vegetarian station. A lot of times, they make it all vegetarian and just leave some green beans on the side for vegans.
2) They are selectively vegan. Some days they do great on their vegan meals! Other days, they just grill some incredibly bland tofu or throw some beans out and call it a day. There have been a couple of times where the tofu wasn’t even vegan.
3) They don’t always label their vegan food, and tend to mislabel. I always find a sign that was just typed out or even written out with no indicators. Also, a lot of times, I have walked past something that was obviously not vegan, but labeled that way. They even stopped labeling anything vegan or vegetarian for a couple of weeks, so it was hard to know what was safe.
4) They don’t seem to know how to make many entrees without soy. So much tofu…
They really are doing good, and we vegans/vegetarians see them trying their best. We appreciate you, Islander Dining!

I’d rate the dining facility as a solid B-. Food is labeled as vegan, there is a station that usually offers vegan entrees but sometimes they just give up and put black beans out and rice or else it ends up being vegetarian. There is a station that does things like BBQ and burgers but always has a vegetarian or vegan option along side the meat. Then there is a home cooking kind of place that has meat plus sides but the sides are such a good variety of veggies that it’s okay. Most of the time when I go in, I can get a vegan meal that is okay. Sometimes I settle for vegetarian and rarely I give up and leave and wish I would have checked the menu online before going in.
