Though SUNY Oneonta posts it’s A-Rated Vegan report throughout the dining halls, eating vegan here can be a struggle. Although they have vegan options, the staff members are often unaware which items are vegan, or what veganism even is. On several occasions I have asked whether or not an item is vegan, and even after checking the ingredients, they falsely told me it was. I’ve been served food with milk, eggs, and chicken numerous times after specifically asking for vegan food. I usually have to ask whether the food in the vegan station is actually vegan or not, because even though it’s labelled vegan the food sometimes contains egg or dairy. When they do have all vegan options at the vegan station, there’s typically a few different kinds of grains and possibly some mushrooms or some kind of vegetable. There aren’t enough options in the station to actually live off of the food. The staff also has a tendency to give you an attitude if you ask them to check labels to see if something is vegan, or they will simply tell you “I don’t know”. I’m constantly getting sick due to the mix ups here and I will not be purchasing a dining plan after this semester.

One of the dining hals, Wilsbach, is actually pretty great for vegans. Looking at the criteria to the left of this review box, they meet a lot! They always offer vegan food and it’s labeled, although on occasion there are mixups and labeling could be much clearer. They have an entire refrigerator that contains non-dairy milk, gluten-free options, and such. They have a vegan desserts too – and they’re labeled! I’ not sure if they have a vegan member on its student advisory board. They could do more to promote vegan options, that’s for sure. In the past, Sodexo has allowed students to advocate for vegan options and such, but usually with little trust and very little talk about issues involved. That could be improved as well. There was a push for meatless mondays that got shut down, so they do not participate in it. There is an all-vegan station in Wilsbach as well. It’s called “The Wild Mushroom.” It sometimes has non-vegan vegetarian options, but usually those are labeled as not being vegan. There is no completely vegan dining facility.

From my experience, Wilsbach is the best vegan friendly dining facility on Oneonta’s campus. They have plenty of great options, but they could advertise it better. Yum!
