Getting vegetarian options at Miami University dining was difficult enough, even more so vegan options. If you throw in any other type of dietary restrictions (gluten, nut allergy, etc.) you’re in a tough spot. Sure there will probably be at least something in one of the dining halls you can eat, but a single option does not a meal make. Furthermore, no one wants to get stuck eating a spinach and mushroom salad for every meal. Where Miami really fails is a lack of accessible vegan protein alternatives for every meal. Protein should be a regular part of a diet, not just something that is included in dinner via a veggie burger.
I had such a hard time consistently finding food I could eat in dining halls that I ended up going to the local grocery store for most of my freshman year and then petitioned to live off-campus my second year just so I could actually get food to eat.

This is a very good choice for students

I think they are actively making an effort. I haven’t been to a dining facility without at least one option for me. The dining website allows you to filter things by animal by-products, meat, fish, and a host of other allergy-specific things. If you have doubts, they always have the ingredient lists available. The bakery (called Patisserie) has a vegan lemon cookie I get every Friday with an Earl Grey. The university isn’t generally great about desert, however. If I find my self desperately needing a brownie, I take the bus to the Moon Co-op, which is by Kroger. The Western Dining commons has an allergy station that is completely free of meat, eggs, milk, all the things. The staff there are also specially trained to eliminate contamination. The student center offers a fake Chipotle burrito, which you can make completely vegan. My personal favorite place is Bell Tower. They have pasta, salad and fruit bars, and a stir fry that is fully customized. You can get tofu, a choice of a bunch of vegetables, and they cook it with clean pots each time. The buffet options usually have vegan nuggets, as well as an alternating array of hot veggie sides. Several places offer a vegan burger. The university does Meatless Mondays, but only during a certain month, not all year. Like being vegan in the rest of the world, it takes work at Miami. I think the dining staff have definitely made steps recently toward making it easier, however.

There are not options suitable for maintaining a healthy vegan diet. No organic foods, no oil free foods, no vegan entrees,, nothing is labeled, and the online system that does tell you what is in things is not accurate either!…. This report card is an inaccurate representation of food on campus.

All I can eat here is hashbrowns, a vegan burger, three different types of rice with veggies, sweet potato, salads, fruit, and wheat bread. Very disappointing. This school is not an A. Some dining halls I get turned away because they offer 0 meals for me. I have never seen vegan labels at Miami University and your best bet is to find the ‘allergy station’. They do not respect vegans and do not label any vegan meals. (with the exception of vegan burger). The bakery offers 0 vegan desserts. Absolutely pitiful. If this school is an A, other colleges must be atrocious. The Mein Station workers rolled their eyes at me and placed my rice with veggies on the grill shared with the meat. They only make exceptions for gluten free people. I am very angry I put $1,250 on my meal card. I would rather and have drove to Whole Foods in Mason Ohio. The 45-1 hour drive is well worth it. This school DOES NOT participate in Meatless Mondays. This school DOES NOT promote vegan options. This school DOES NOT label vegan options. I can’t find the good 30 calorie milk, they only offer 90 calorie soymilk and 90 calorie vanilla almondmilk. – Class of 2018
