Horrible vegan options. Chick-Fil-A, Burger King and other “carnist” fast-food eateries dominate the campus. Grade: F-

I always found vegan food, but wish they had more options.

ASU’s vegan options are incredible. They have their own station for every meal. It can be a bit fatty, but it is mainly low fat and overall, it is incredible. They offer a great variety of veggies and grains, and usually have a soup as well. Very vegan-friendly.

I’ve been on the ASU campus for many years and sadly ASU is still behind the times when it comes to offering vegan options to students, staff and faculty in the mainstream. Unfortunately, most options are only salads. I will say that the University Club and ASU Catering do offer vegan meals and desserts, however, they are not very accessible to the student and staff population. As progressive as ASU claims to be, it is surprising and disappointing to see that it is slow to offer healthier vegan options to the masses. I say masses now since the US has been actively engaged in an obesity epidemic since 2005, and it’s getting worse. In light of all of the research that illustrate the impacts of a vegan diet on water, soil and other resources, it is amazing that ASU doesn’t trailblaze a path in this area of great importance.

They meet my needs. Has Meatless Mondays too

There are pretty much no options for vegans here. They make it seem like they care in the dining halls with their “vegan” area, but most of the time that area is serving egg dishes. If I want to go to the dining hall, its a salad for me which is a total waste of my stupid meal plan. It is ridiculous how rude the staff is about it and how not many care. No vegan labels and no vegan options makes for a very stressful year.

Being a vegan on campus has its high points and its low points. Back when Engrained first started, it was an awesome place for vegans. Everything was always labelled… an oasis in the vegan desert of ASU. Over time, they stopped labelling vegan items, and sometimes they just didn’t have anything vegan at all. I finally decided to e-mail the campus dining people to ask about it, and they forwarded my e-mail to the head chef. He wrote me back a rude e-mail about how vegans are an insignificant tiny minority of the campus population and how it doesn’t make economic sense to have options for us, ignoring the fact that I’d pointed out in my original e-mail that omnis and lacto-ovo vegetarians can and do eat vegan food also… plus, it’s almost always kosher and halal. Other inquiries were always met with similar responses – an eager, helpful-sounding person at campus dining passing the word on to somebody else who totally dropped the ball. My on-the-go meals usually consisted of an Odwalla smoothie and maybe the vegetarian roll or inari sushi, which sometimes they decided not to stock. Dining hall options were sometimes excellent but often disappointing, non-existent or mislabelled.
