  • Undergrad

    There are a lot of vegan options on campus. Sometimes the labels are wrong, though. You have to check when it’s not obvious. Once I remember meat was labeled as one of those plant-based meats, and it was actually meat. Other times vegan and vegetarian get mixed up.

    Bon Appetit is the dining service for the main cafeteria. The building used to be the DUC, now it will be in the new Student Life Center. There was a vegan station in the old cafeteria–we’ll see what the new one is like. I’m sure it will still be there. The other stations in the main cafeteria also had vegan options. Usually there was pasta, rice, stir fry, soup, hummus and pita, and a salad bar. They put in a lot of effort. Bon Appetit is good at altering menus to better please students. The manager is also incredibly helpful.

    The other cafeteria Cox has stations where nearly everything is served in compostable to-go containers. You can find vegan options there–burritos, falafel and pita, rice/tofu/curry, salad station, smoothies.

  • Grad Student

    I consistently have problems getting vegan meals at graduate school and departmental functions. The graduate school and the department frequently cater food at functions associated with coursework as well as graduate school and departmental required seminars. I consistently am met with severely limited or no options for vegans. I was given an almond and peanut nut mix once, while others had a variety of breakfast sandwiches and meat and dairy side items. Other times, I am limited to fruit and potato chips while others have sandwiches, wraps, pizza, meat or dairy rice dishes. Meals at these functions are catered at no charge for students but with no vegan options, so I have to purchase my own lunch. In the few instances where one substantial vegan option is offered, for instance like box lunches, they run out of the lunches and I am left with having to find lunch somewhere else.

    You can find vegan options in all dining halls. Cox Dining Hall has the most and best options (I love the lemon tofu rice bowls and the burritos!), and the DUC has an all-vegan station. Watch out at the DUC, though–the portion sizes are very small and they’ve been known to slip up and serve non-vegan food. It’s generally pretty good, though.
