I’m pretty unimpressed. At Lenoir Hall, the vendors are cooking the falafil on the same grill as the lamb, for example. It’s completely contaminated. The food workers handle the vegan food without changing gloves after handling the dead animals. I think UNC has a long, long way to go.

I think UNC does a pretty good job with vegan options on campus. UNC participates in Meatless Mondays by offering extra vegan options. They sell a lot pre-made items for a lot of local vendors that have vegan options/labeling (Med Deli, Cosmic Cantina, etc). For some reason I always see chocolate soy milk sold but not regular soy or almond milk.
We have a couple of pro-animal groups (Student Animal Legal Defense Fund, Carolina Promoting Animal Welfare, and Helping Paws) plus lots of environmental advocacy groups, plus Fresh, Local, Organic (FLO) for food. A couple years ago the summer reading was “Eating Animals” and Jonathan Safron Foer came to talk about it.
I’d say UNC has made great strides, and there’s lot of passionate students and groups to connect with, but there is always room for improvement! I’d specifically like to see more vegan options at athletic games and other university sponsored events.
