The University of Michigan-Flint’s Vegan Dinning options are far from appealing or even sustainable. While my time at university I did my best to advocate for change and more inclusion for the dinning options. I talked with the heads of food service about my concerns but was met with opposition. I asked that food dishes have their ingredients clearly stated to all but it did not go anywhere.

I asked what was in the pizza dough that they used since they told me that they could make me a pizza with no cheese, but was told that the ingredients were not on the box and they would need to call someone about it. I did never get an answer of if there was animal products in the dough.

During my time they did get the impossible burger to have another option that was plant based after hearing my concerns. They did say that I could pre-order dinner options 24 hours but with the way that college is this turned out to be a hard thing to do.

I was not the only one to find the option at UM-Flint to be non inclusive. I talked with other vegans and they had similar experiences and concerns. One time I was so frustrated and hunger I almost considered eating some non vegan soup. It was heart breaking and no one should ever feel like that.

I did my best to fight for better options. But I was told that is was basically a money issue and that there was not enough students to make having more vegan options a reality. I hope the future it will get better and what little I was able to accomplish will help for greater change in the future.
